If you're coming into this album knowing nothing about it, then it's likely that you'll see it as just another lunkheaded, sleazeball slice of glam punk. Well, it is in a way, but there's more to it than that - there has to be some way to explain how a man can go from writing sarcastic tales of gloom and destruction, covering Joy Division and writing anthems like 'The Losers' to having songs titled 'I Want Some Pussy' and 'Tokyo Girls Go Bang Bang'. Honest, there is...

Back in 1990, the Space Age Playboy's lead singer, Kory Clarke, recorded one of the great hard rock debuts of the 90's with Warrior Soul's Last Decade Dead Century. Clarke's politically charged lyrics and attitude set them apart from the rest of the hard-rock scene as something just a bit special - the only problem was that no bugger paid the slightest bit of attention to it (likewise with their two follow up albums).

Then something else happened - there was no longer a Bush in the White House. Instead we had a man who played the sax live on TV and had his cock sucked in the Oval Office. ROCK AND ROLL BABY!!!. So yeah, Kory wasn't too bothered about raging against the machine during the Clinton years. His work was done... It was time to PAAAAAAARTY!!!.

The final Warrior Soul album, itself titled Space Age Playboys, was a full on up-tempo blast of knuckleheaded punk attitude with only a cursory glance backwards to WS's more cerebral past. And that's the vein Clarke has continued in here, only more so, TO THE MAX!!!.

There's no real need to analyse any of this - what you get is amphetamine, LSD and ecstasy fueled, hyperactive slabs of spazoid riffing, a touch of psychedelia and Clarke's gloriously sneering vocals. What did you think songs titled 'Buzz On', 'The Band Gets High' and 'Phazeout' by a band called the Space Age Playboys would sound like?

'Cities, Scenes And Thieves' slows things done for a few minutes and actually seems to have a bit of Warrior Soul's more reflective mood about it, but from there on out you can safely switch your brain off and your pogo shoes to on, because the deliberately dumb dial just got turned up to 11. As well as the aforementioned 'I Want Some Pussy' and 'Tokyo Girls Go Bang Bang', we get 'Rock'n Roll Limo' and you know what? They're all pretty fun songs. OK, so they're borderline offensive and an insult to intelligent people everywhere, but who gives a crap about that stuff...

As long as you can get past a once eloquent and politically motivated guy singing a bunch of songs about getting high and scoring chicks and recognize that there it is delivered with just enough irony to make it acceptable (Andrew WK take note) then you'll be fine. Just set your phasers to 'dumb fun' and have a blast.

about

Minnie-Apple Records Minneapolis, Minnesota

"The once and future Tattooed Millionaires frontman Johnny Jetson returns with this snarly glam-punk gang. Jetson's trick is to wrap his decadent, sleazy diatribes around pop hooks so good you can't escape 'em. Next thing you know you're naked in an alley somewhere. He's a charmer for sure." - Classic Rock Magazine, May 2019 Issue 26 ... more
